Two Terrific Days

On Monday we started off with our usual warm ups and skip counting. Then we went on to social studies. We worked on our Indian projects. We got to choose between a poster, a song, a story,
or three stamps. In science we are learning about force. This particular lab had to deal with a toy car, a white board, and three science books. Can you guess what we did? We were measuring distance on different surfaces. We measured how far the car would go on the tile in the science lab, the tile in the hallways, and the carpet in the activity room. The surface that made the car go the farthest was the tile in the science room because it was smooth and had nothing to stop it like cracks. The surface that made the car go the least farthest was the carpet because it had more friction.
Tuesday was packed! In read-aloud we finished our book, The Maze of Bones. We also had our mystery reader Mrs. Petrik who we would like to thank for bringing treats for each class in honor of Simon and Oliver's birthday. In science we made catapults. We measured distance and accuracy. And then of course, we had our recycled car race! The winner for 46 was Caroline, and the winner for 45 and the over all winner was Caitlyn. Great job to everyone who participated! The cars looked awesome!
Happy Holidays,
Mackenzie G.

What an extraordinary week!

Week of October 5,2009

Homework- Last week's homework from from Mrs. Johnson's class included: Spelling Packets which had several worksheets about skills on spelling the 20 words we get assigned to take a weekly test on. The homework also consisted of a reading log. You have to read at least twenty minutes every night. In Mr. D's class we received Objective Fun #5. The first few days of the week were "Homework Free" because of the fact that the math homework came out in gibberish. The computer had a big glitch so the homework didn't get printed out right.

During Class- If you are in Mrs. Johnson's homeroom class you'd know that we listened to an audio recording of Mrs. Hutchens' voice with pictures. The video was about Texas, its regions, and their landforms. According to the video Texas' regions are the Great Plains, the Coastal Plains (our region), the North-central plains, and the Mountains and Basins. We were given booklets containing a few pages with drawings of the different regions. We had to color them in. We did some labs in Mr. Dulworth's class. Both classes would know to we did D.P.E., journal writing, and target reading in Mrs. Johnson's class. In Mr. D's class we also had number tiles and TEKS Target Practice. We had 2 substitute teachers. In Mrs. Johnson's class we had Mrs. Hammock and in Mr. Dulworth's room we had Mr. W. We ended the week with a "Fun Friday"! We did a cool dance called the Cupid Shuffle! What an extraordinary week! By: Simon Petrik

Flashcard Quiz.....yikes!

Well, I returned to school today happy to receive a good report from my sub!! Nothing makes me happier! In class, we had tech lab where students measured their current height for a future activity. During that time we took the dreaded flash card quiz! There was no social studies or science today due to tech lab, but we did get to cover two digit by one digit multiplicaiton during math time. Nothing like multiplication to brighten your day!

A Day in The Life of a Top Dog

Mrs. Johnson's classroom......
Today in Mrs. Johnson's classroom we learned about how to put three actions in our stories instead of telling the story by itself. We also rotated centers. We played games on the computers and we did independent reading where we could go any where in the room! We did anchor station which was a reading passage and we went to the back table with Mrs. Johnson and read "Mystery in the Moonlight". It was a fantastic book!!
We had an awesome time in Mrs. Johnson's classroom.
Mr. Dulworth's classroom...........
In Mr. Dulworth's classroom we did usual math tiles, then we did text (or teats) charter practice and skip counted by 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's and we are our 6's. When we got back from lunch our mystery reader was Mrs. Mountain. Thank you Mrs. Mountain for coming to read to us. Then we did math centers. At the yellow table there were Vocabulary Cards then at the blue table we played Math Blaster on the computer. Then we went to the back with Mr. Dulworth and did fun math problems! At the green table we did an assignment about missing factors and at the Black Table we worked with learning palettes. We had a fantastic time in Mr. Dulworth's class!!

Three days crammed into one blog!

Ok, need to catch up on our blog!! I think I have been scared to after Mackenzie's great one. Here is what has been going on in our classroom

In math, Monday we had a review with clickers that led to our test on Tuesday. Today we explored making arrays and fact families using snap cubes for multiplication and division facts.

In science, we are still exploring the affects of heat on matter. We watched a united streaming on Monday and did the Kool Kups lab on Tuesday. Today we took the day off due to tech lab!

Landforms was our topic of discussion in social studies. Monday we learned of some landforms and made them with homemade playdoh. Tuesday we looked at what landforms were in certain regions. Today tech lab took up our time, but we will do a websearch tomorrow.

Our Fabulous Friday

Mrs. Johnson's Classroom...
Today in Mrs. Johnson's classroom we had book buddies with Mrs. Davis' kindergarten class. We tried to compliment their reading in as many ways as we could, and we tried to set a good example for them and be the extraordinary fourth grade top dogs that we are. We would like to thank Mrs. Green for being our mystery reader today. She read us two exciting books about animals. Besides the fun part of our class time we did our usual journal entry, and our question of the day. We had our spelling pre-test and our paragraph editing test. We had a wonderful day in Mrs. Johnson's excellent classroom.
Mr. D's Classroom...
Today in math we learned the basic words in a math sentence that tell you to add or subtract, to find the total, and if you have your total already. We did a partner activity with word problems and estimations. We turned it in with confidence we were going to get a good grade. In science today, we worked on finishing our matter definition cards. To end the day, we did a fun Friday activity with section forty-six. It was a fantastic math fact racing game. Mr. D would hold up a math fact card to us and we tried to think of the product before our opponent could. It ended up with section forty-six beating section forty-five by one point. If you ask me, I would say we're all great mathematicians! What I enjoyed the most about this fabulous Friday was the class math activity even though my class got beat.
Here's to having a great weekend,
Mackenzie Garcia

Thursday, Thursday....

Another day down in our land of learning. We had a pretty eventful day! First, in math we took a quiz over estimation and subtraction. In science, we explored how matter is affected by the adding or reduction of heat. We explored this with both the ballon lab and the hot plate lab. In social studies, we finished our regions book and took a short Types of Map quiz. Tomorrow is our first student blogger!! I can't wait!

Tech Lab is here!!

What a great day! Today we started Tech Lab, and the kids were so excited to see Mrs. Fortune! We also did our first math station rotation day, which gave me the opportunity to pull some small groups to work with. In social studies, we started making our Regions book which is something that we will do for the next couple of weeks!

Two Days and Two Events

Monday and Tuesday have flown by and I haven't posted yet! Well Monday marked the kick off of our school fundraiser. In science we studied for our up coming test, and in math we explored estimation with addition and subtraction.

Tuesday we were excited to have an author visit our school, actually I should say authors. We had an hour to spend with them and learned a lot of valuable information in regards to writing. Due to that visit, our classroom time diminished, so we took our science test and worked on some math problems covering subtraction and estimation.

Can you speak spanish?

Already another weekend! Wow, what a busy day. We took our place value test today, which I will grade over the weekend. We finished volume by finding out how to find the volume of a solid through water displacement. We also finished longitude and latitude with a baseball activity. One of the most exciting pieces of news for me though was the tremendous improvement I saw this week on math facts! Way to go guys! Finally, I would like to thank Mrs. Brown for being our Mystery Reader. She actually brought a book that was in spanish and she translated which was so cool! She also read a book about a tight rope walker who walked between the Twin Towers, a great book just to touch on the Towers. Time to sign off! Have a great weekend!

Can you draw a picture?

I asked my students that question today. First, can you draw a picture to solve a math problem? This is one of the most important math strategies that they can use when solving a problem. If they can draw it, usually they can solve it! Second, I asked can you draw a picture to show your vocabulary words? We did this in science today for 5 of our vocab. words that have been introduced. In social studies, we took our Continents and Oceans Test which will be graded tonight. Cross your fingers!!

Two Days crammed into one Blog!

Ok, what a couple of days we had here in the Dulworth classroom. I didn't post yesterday due to a meeting, but I will fill you in today!

Yesterday, we covered putting numbers on a number line. Ask your child about Soul Train! In science, we started talking about matter and what properties make it matter. We did a short lab as a group that will lead up to a larger lab on Tuesday. In social studies, we talked about the map and its important features. We also discussed the continents and oceans.

Today, we explored rounding in our class with an activity called search and rescue. In science, we created animotos showing the states of matter. We were also visited by the School Board in section 46 math. Finally, we were grateful to have our mystery reader Mrs. Lindsay today! She read two great books that were very entertaining!

No more for this week, have a great three day weekend!

Armadillo from Amarillo

Our week is half way over!! Wondering what we did today? Well, in math we took a quiz about expanded form, and comparing/ordering numbers. We also introduced our TEKS Target practice into our routine. We will do this everyday to spiral TEKS we are learning or will learn. In science we had our first lab "The bouncing ball lab," which helped to introduce manipulated, controlled, and responding variables. My homeroom class today set up their social studies notebook, and we read the Armadillo from Amarillo for social studies. In all, a very busy, but productive day!

Welcoming a New Month

A start of a new month and so many exciting things happening already. Today we did a variety of things, some old, some new. In math, we compared and ordered numbers in a classroom game. We also introduced drill command to help with our multiplication facts! Science was very interesting because we took digital pictures of lab safety rules (thanks to Blake's mom and Ms. G.) and we also took our lab safety quiz! Finally, we wrapped up our symbols unit in social studies by completing our "Symbol Poster" (some students did not finish and are finishing it for homework or in the classroom tomorrow). I hope everyone has a great evening and I will see you on Wonderful Wednesday!

August 28th-First Blog

Today was an extremely productive day in our classroom! In math, we explored how to write numbers in expanded form. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the students grasped the concept. We played beat the teacher to reinforce the concept, as well as, use it to review place value and written form. In science, we finished discussing lab safety and decided how we would show our lab safety rules as pictures. Finally, in social studies, we started making a Texas poster to wrap up our symbols unit.

On a final note, today we shared our glogsters! All I can say is wow! It never ceases to amaze me how students can take a simple assignment and make it something amazing. Bravo guys!
